"Spike" is an original performance piece created by Michael Menes & Company in which Michael performs as a pointy four legged stilt creature, seemingly attacking an opposite balloon creature (nicknamed "Mr. Bubbles") who surprises audiences by turning out to produce a hatchling ("Baby Spike").

The piece is a "play of opposites" in which the audience retrospectively discovers they have been misinterpreting what they are experiencing. The piece was first performed at the Celebration Barn in South Paris, Maine circa 1990 in a show called "Night Fright" with Michael Menes, Fritz Grobe, and Mike Miclon.

The sketch was only performed a few times since this early run, however, the stilt creature Spike was a huge hit as a plug-in animated character in festivals and main stage events all around the world. The sketch was refurbished for the Celebration Barn's big fundraising event in June of 2010 with Kyle Driggs, a Philadelphia based juggler and movement artist who assisted Michael as "Baby Spike."

In this performance, the "New Mr. Bubbles" made his stage debut! The next step in the evolution of the piece is to create a high quality video short.  The goal is to make an adaptation for cinema of the stage version in Maine in the dead of winter on frozen lakes and quarries.

Dancer and mime Karen Montanaro will perform the roll of "Baby Spike" and Leland Faulkner will be the director of photography for the high definition video short.
